Quality Awards and Recognition


As an organization made up of people dedicated to continuous improvement, at Heartland Health, we constantly measure our performance against other regional and national hospitals and organizations, to ensure that we provide the best possible care to our patients and demonstrate quality in all that we do. The health care consumer today expects, and deserves, ever–higher levels of quality and safety in health organizations. Here at Heartland, we are committed to constant evaluation and improvement to best serve our community and the region.

2012 - Heartland Health has been recognized as one of “Most Wired’s Most Improved” hospitals, according to the results of the 2012 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. According to Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, hospitals designated “Most Wired” are using health information technology to improve performance in a number of areas.

2012 - Heartland Health just landed on Becker’s Hospital Review 100 Great Community Hospitals list. The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team analyzes information, recognition and rankings from a variety of industry sources to compile their annual list. All hospitals include fewer than 550 patient beds, have minimal teaching programs and have demonstrated commitments to the health of their local population through clinical excellence, community involvement and various other efforts.

2011 - Heartland Regional Medical Center (HRMC) was named one of the 2011 Top Performing Hospitals in the Premier healthcare alliance’s national QUEST® collaborative. Based on three years (January 2008 - December 2010) of the QUEST: High Performing Hospitals collaborative, HRMC was recognized for top performance in:

  • Increasing delivery of recommended evidence-based care to every patient, every time, by 17.5 percent.
  • Saving lives by reducing avoidable hospital mortalities by a 1 percentage point. On a baseline mortality rate of 2.11 percent a 1 percentage point decline is about a 50 percent relative decline.
  • Safely reducing the cost of care for each patient's hospitalization by an average of $1467 or 23 percent.

2011 - Heartland Health was named one of the top 100 “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” for 2011 by Modern Healthcare, a magazine for business news and research in the health–care arena. Out of more than 327 organizations that applied to be considered for the honor, Heartland was selected.

2011 - Heartland Regional Medical Center (HRMC) was named one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health–care organizations in America. HRMC was recognized by The Joint Commission based on hospitals that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma.

2011 - Heartland Health received Gold Awards in 2008 and 2009 and Platinum Awards for 2010 and 2011 as well as the Worksite Innovation Award in 2008 and in 2011. American Heart Association's (AHA's) Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Recognition Program (Platinum Award) and the Worksite Innovation Award, two of the AHA's highest forms of corporate recognition. Designed to be a catalyst for positive change in American business, the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Recognition Program recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees by creating physical activity programs within the workplace. The Worksite Innovation Award is given to a company that lead the development and implementation of innovative and effective programs that promote physical activity, specifically in the workplace.

2009 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award - Named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th Secretary of Commerce, the Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 to enhance the competitiveness and performance of United States businesses. The award promotes excellence in organizational performance, recognizes the achievements and results of U.S. organizations, and publicizes successful performance strategies. The President of the United States presents the winner with this prestigious award.

2009 - Foster G. McGaw Prize - one of the most respected community service honors in healthcare. Each year, this $100,000 prize is presented to one health-care organization that provides innovative programs that significantly improve the health and well-being of its community. The Foster G. McGaw Prize is sponsored by The Baxter International Foundation, the Cardinal Health Foundation, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Health Research & Educational Trust.

2009 Hospital Value Index TM Best in ValueTM: Quality Affordability & Efficiency and Satisfaction Best in ValueTM: Superior Quality Merit Award Top 100 HospitalTM Hospital Value IndexTM: Best in Region Hospital Value IndexTM: Best in State. A result of the study conducted by Data Advantage, LLC, the nation's leader in measuring healthcare value, Heartland ranked among the top tier of all hospitals nationwide, achieving high marks in quality, affordability, efficiency and patient satisfaction. The Hospital Value IndexTM is the first and only performance indicator to focus on the value hospitals provide to their community and utilizes the latest publicly available data, including Hospital Compare from July 2009 to recognize these accomplishments.

2009 - Commonwealth Fund - Heartland Regional Medical Center is listed in the top 1 percent nationally, number 19 of the 4,440 hospitals evaluated. The Commonwealth Fund, a health care quality improvement resource, has created a web site WhyNotTheBest. org. It is a free resource for health care professionals interested in tracking performance on various measures of health care quality. For all quality indicators combined, Heartland Regional Medical Center is listed in the top 1 percent nationally, number 19 of the 4,440 hospitals evaluated. The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation working
toward a high performance health system. It enables organizations to compare their performance against that of peer organizations, against a range of benchmarks, and over time. Case studies and improvement tools spotlight successful improvement strategies of the nation's top performers.

2009 - Missouri Association of Hospital Auxiliaries - Auxiliary of the Year Heartland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary was among four hospital auxiliaries honored by the Missouri Association of Hospital Auxiliaries for their volunteer services to the health care community. These auxiliaries were recognized for outstanding service between June 1, 2008, and May 31, 2009. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary in St. Joseph, Mo., received recognition for its exceptional efforts as an auxiliary. From June 2008 through May 2009, more than 625 auxilians performed 64,816 hours of volunteer work.

2007 - American Hospital Association NOVA Award given to Patee Market Youth Dental Clinic. This award honors effective, collaborative efforts to improve the health of communities.

2007, 2006, 2005 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Heartland Regional Medical Center a Medal of Honor for the organ and tissue donation program.

2005, 2000 - Excellence in Missouri Foundation awarded Heartland Health its Missouri Quality Award (MQA). The MQA recognizes Missouri organizations that excel in quality management and quality achievement.

2005 - St. Joseph YWCA awarded Heartland Health the Employer of Excellence Award. This award recognizes organizations that provide a positive work environment, empower women to realize their potential, and consistently promote women to positions of leadership.

2008 - Heartland Health was presented with The United Way's first Family-Friendly Employer Award.

2008 - Second Harvest of Greater St. Joseph awarded Heartland Health the Humanitarian Award.

2005 - Health Science Library Network of Kansas City Awarded Heartland Regional Medical Center the Outstanding One-Person Health Science Library Award.

2004, 2003, 2001 - Excellence in Missouri Foundation awarded Heartland Health its Missouri Team Quality Award (MTQA). The MTQA recognizes teams and organizations that have demonstrated role-model processes to reach improvement goals.

2004 - Primaris Quality Award (formerly MissouriPRO Quality Award) awarded to Heartland Regional Medical Center for clinical excellence in patient care and commitment to quality improvement. MissouriPRO is the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Missouri.

2004, 2000 - Solucient 100 Top Hospitals ® Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success awarded to Heartland Regional Medical Center for demonstrating superior clinical, operational and financial performance.
